Florida lifts equine herpesvirus quarantine

Posted: Monday, January 22, 2007 10:47 PM

The last of the quarantines caused by the equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) outbreak that affected horse farms and clinics in Florida has been lifted as of January 20, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs.

“We feel that we reached containment in the areas that were affected in Martin, Marion, and Palm Beach counties,” said Mark Fagan, spokesman for the Department of Agriculture.

During the outbreak, 13 confirmed cases were found and six horses were euthanized.

Ten properties were quarantined, including Payson Park Training Center, which stables more than 500 Thoroughbreds. Only two barns there were still under quarantine as of last week, after one horse tested positive there for the virus and has since recovered.
