Sheikh Mohammed buys Stonerside farm in Saratoga

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum recently purchased Bob and Janice McNair’s Stonerside Stable farm and training center in Saratoga Springs, New York, for nearly $17.5-million.

The McNairs bought the 106-acre farm and an additional 14 acres eight years ago from the Whitney family for $5.5-million. The farm adjoins Saratoga Race Course and includes a one-mile training track, two barns with 46 stalls combined, an 8,000 square-foot mansion, and a lodge.

The McNairs put the property on the market in 2004. Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley Stable leased the farm in 2005 and ’06. Eclipse Award finalist Bernardini trained there as a two-year-old. 

Jimmy Bell, president of Darley USA, said a synthetic surface would be installed on the training track.

“Having been guests on the property, you can tell the positive impact on the horses' overall attitudes, and they appeared to thrive in that environment,” Bell told the Albany Times-Union. “This is an opportunity to give these horses every chance to be successful on the racetrack.”

The Whitney family built the farm in 1938 and based the powerful Greentree Stable on the property.
