Magna intends to close Great Lakes Downs when upcoming meet ends

Magna Entertainment Corp. intends to close Great Lakes Downs at the conclusion of the 100-day race meet, which begins May 5 and runs through November 6.

The disclosure came Wednesday during scheduled contract talks between Magna and the Michigan Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, the designated certified horsemen’s organization at Muskegon, Michigan, track.

“It’s obviously very upsetting,” said Michigan HBPA President Fred Berry. “It’s devastating to the breeders and to the overall racing industry.

“[Magna] just didn’t want to continue to take a loss [and receive no] legislative help. We’re surrounded by 20 casinos, and it put us at a competitive disadvantage. We need some sort of slots or some form of gaming.”

At the meeting, Magna officials told the HBPA that the company intends to honor its commitment of the upcoming 100-day meet, but suggested the group look at a shorter meet to cut operating expenses.

Magna lost nearly $1.6-million at Great Lakes in 2006.
