Bellew, North America’s oldest racing official, dies at 95

Alfred "Alfie" Bellew, believed to be Thoroughbred racing's oldest licensed official, passed away Saturday evening at age 95.
 
Mr. Bellew was born October 29, 1910, into a racing family in Latonia, Kentucky, and worked in racing in various capacities until August 2004 at River Downs.

Bellew’s father was a trainer and official starter. The younger Bellew worked at tracks in Kentucky, Florida, Louisiana, and Ohio.  He served as a state steward, clerk of scales and paddock judge at River Downs.
  
Bellew’s many experiences in racing include witnessing Seabiscuit's two starts at River Downs in 1936.
 
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. EST at Connley Brothers Funeral Home 11 E. Southern Avenue in Latonia, Kentucky. A funeral Mass will take place at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Latonia located at 3612 Church Street.
