Barbaro fund to raise money for equine health research

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association has established the NTRA Charities-Barbaro Memorial Fund, a national fundraising program for equine health and safety research created in the name of the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner, who was euthanized on January 29.

The fund will raise research dollars for projects dealing with laminitis, the often-fatal hoof disease that plagued Barbaro after he shattered his right hind limb in the opening stages of the Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 20.

“Gretchen and I hope Barbaro’s memory can be carried on through advances in medical research, including a cure for laminitis,” said Roy Jackson, who co-owned the Dynaformer colt with his wife, Gretchen.

The NTRA will organize fundraising initiatives at Triple Crown races and other major racing events held during the spring and summer. Merchandise sales will help support the fund.

 “The outpouring of emotion and support from racing fans has been so amazing that we wanted to find a fitting way for those fans and our industry to honor Barbaro,” said Alex Waldrop, the NTRA’s chief executive officer. “We consulted with the Jacksons and other industry organizations to see how we could bring our combined resources to bear in this endeavor. We anticipate a busy few months as we work together to assist projects that can have a great impact on the health and safety of Thoroughbreds and, through our focus on laminitis, horses of other breeds as well.”

NTRA Charities, the NTRA’s nonprofit subsidiary, will oversee the fund. All money raised will be directed to existing equine health charities.
