Fairplex begins planning for expansion

Posted: Tuesday, December 25, 2007 2:31 PM

With the long-term status of Hollywood Park unclear beyond 2008, the Los Angeles County Fair will attempt to position Fairplex Park as a venue to help fill a potential void in the Southern California circuit.

Bay Meadows Land Co. has not made any commitments on Hollywood's future after the 2008 racing season. When the subsidiary of Stockbridge Real Estate Fund purchased Hollywood in July 2005, company president Terry Fancher said he would take three years to determine whether to continue operating the facility as a racetrack or to redevelop the property.

Hollywood President Jack Liebau said on December 17 that the timeline remains in place.

The Los Angeles County Fair's board of directors has instructed its staff to begin planning for a project costing approximately $40-million that would expand the Fairplex track from five furlongs to one mile, with a conversion to a synthetic surface and the possible addition of a turf course.

The stable area would nearly double from 1,300 stalls to around 2,200, making Fairplex a viable solution for the stall shortage that would result from Hollywood closing.

Fairplex Chief Executive Jim Henwood presented the concept to Southern California track officials in mid-December.

“At this point we are interested in creating a year-round training facility,” said Wendy Talarico, communications manager for the Los Angeles County Fair. “We're looking for support from the industry because this would be a resource for the industry to use on a year-round basis.”

A specific funding mechanism has not been determined, and the Los Angeles County Fair is not planning to pay for any of the project itself, Talarico said.

The expansion could begin after the Fairplex live meet in September 2008. Fairplex typically runs 16 live dates per year, and the fair could seek additional dates if the expansion moves forward.

Los Alamitos in Orange County also has proposed an expansion to accommodate live Thoroughbred dates in the event that Hollywood closes.
