Longtime horseman Edwin K. Cleveland Jr. dies

Posted: Sunday, December 23, 2007 3:48 PM

Trainer Edwin K. “Ted” Cleveland Jr., who was involved in the Thoroughbred industry for 45 years, died on Friday in Lexington. He was 76.

Among the standouts trained by Cleveland were Grade 3 winners Faster Than Sound and Convenient as well as graded stakes-placed stakes winners Hoist Emy’s Flag and Hinterland.

Faster Than Sound won three of four starts as a two-year-old in 1986, including a nine-length romp in the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs and a four-length triumph in the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park. Faster Than Sound closed his juvenile campaign with a runner-up finish to eventual 1987 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Bet Twice in the Sapling Stakes (G2).

A native of Cincinnati, Cleveland also owned and bred horses.

Cleveland trained Convenient, who nipped Tunerup by a nose to win the 1980 Salvator Mile Handicap (G3) at Monmouth Park.

A memorial mass will be held at 2 p.m. EST on Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Lexington. A celebration of life gathering will be held following the mass at Mulligans Gardenside Café from 4-7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr., Lexington, 40504.
