Trainer John Morgan dead at 76

Retired Arkansas-based trainer John Morgan died of cancer on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was 76.

A native of Hulbert, Oklahoma, Morgan was a longtime horseman who trained for around 35 years. He was around the racetrack for most of his life and worked as a pony boy before becoming a trainer.
 
Morgan trained 1977 Regaey Island Handicap winner Quite Welcome and winners Carnation Kid and Lucky La Ree, among others.

Morgan is survived by his wife of 50 years, Winnie Morgan. 

A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Thursday at 10:30 a.m. CST at the Chaplain’s Building on the Oaklawn Park backstretch.
