Pennsylvania owner-breeder Wickes dies
Owner-breeder Helen Hickman Wickes, who was involved in the Thoroughbred industry for more than seven decades, died on August 11 at her home at Carters Thicket Farm in Unionville, Pennsylvania, after a short illness. She was 83.
A native of Louisville, Wickes was the widow of Walter Wickes Jr., who died in 2005. The couple campaigned multiple stakes winner Aonbarr and Grade 3-placed stakes winner Archie Beamish, among others.
After attending Mills College and the University of Georgia, Wickes moved to Devon, Pennsylvania in the mid-1940s to gallop steeplechase horses for trainer David O’Dell. She married and settled in the area soon afterward.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Wickes’ memory to Cheshire Land Preservation Fund, Box 983, Unionville, Pennsylvania, 19375.
