Illinois horse slaughter plant will stay open

A federal appeals court decision will give Cavel International the ability to resume horse slaughter operations in Illinois.

The DeKalb slaughterhouse appealed a recent United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois decision that shut the plant’s horse slaughter operations down two weeks ago. On Thursday, the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit granted the company’s request to remain open.

Cavel has filed a lawsuit that challenges an Illinois law banning horse slaughter. The injunction will allow the plant to remain open as that case progresses.
