Barbaro feeling better after surgery

Barbaro, injured winner of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), has had no complications since undergoing surgery on his laminitic left hind foot on Saturday, according to a press release from the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center on Tuesday.

Chief of Surgery Dr. Dean Richardson, D.V.M., removed damaged hoof wall tissue on January 9 and 13. During the second procedure, Richardson also cut Barbaro’s deep digital flexor tendon to reduce pressure on the coffin bone (the major bone within the hoof).

“Barbaro’s comfort improved considerably following the procedure on Saturday morning,” Richardson said.  “He has been standing and moving around his stall well enough that sling support has not been added since. His appetite has improved and his vital signs are stable. Overall, we are pleased with his progress following the setback to his left hind foot.”

Barbaro remains in the intensive care unit of New Bolton’s George D. Widener Hospital. New Bolton officials said their next update would be issued on Thursday unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.
