Noted equine artist Eve Fout, of The Plains, Virginia, died on Wednesday. She was 78.

A long-time steeplechase supporter, Fout was well known for her bronzes depicting horses in action, including two perpetual trophies awarded by the National Steeplechase Association.

Fout was a co-founder of the American Academy of Equine Art. Her drawings, oil paintings, and bronze sculptures have been displayed at the Sporting Library in Middleburg, Virginia.

Born Eve Prime, she grew up in Warrenton, Virginia, where she competed in horse shows and equestrian. With her late husband, Paul Fout, who died in 2005, the couple impacted Thoroughbred racing, steeplechase racing, horse shows, and fox hunting under the stable name Coosaw.

Paul Fout trained 2000 Flower Bowl Invitational Handicap (G1) winner Colstar for owner-breeder Beverly Randolph Steinman.

In a Virginia Thoroughbred Association blog, horse owner and former Virginia Racing Commissioner Arthur Arundel said Eve Fout’s support of the Piedmond Environmental Council helped save thousands of acres of open land from commercial development.

Services for Eve Fout will be at noon on December 12 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville, Virginia. She is survived by three children, including steeplechase trainer Doug Fout. A former champion steeplechase jockey, Doug Fout conditioned 2004 champion steeplechaser Hirapour (Ire) for Eldon Farm.
