Louisiana Downs jockey Burch dies in crash

Louisiana Downs jockey Lucy Burch died on Wednesday after being ejected from a sport utility vehicle north of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Burch, 28, died around midnight CDT on Louisiana Highway 1, www.ktbs.com reported. She was a passenger in an Oldsmobile Bravada driven by Eric Nipper, 36.

Nipper lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The SUV landed on top of Burch, who was not wearing a seatbelt.

Nipper and passenger, George Ragsdale, 36, were taken to LSU Hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not considered life threatening.

An investigation into what caused Nipper to lose control of the vehicle is being conducted.

Burch earned 20 wins from 369 mounts since 2001. Her mounts compiled purse earnings of $243,357 while also compiling 22 runner-up and 31 third place finishes.
