Del Mar director emeritus Burgener dies

Posted: Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Clair Burgener, who helped guide Del Mar through unprecedented growth in the 1980s and '90s as a member of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Board of Directors, died on September 9. He was 84.

Burgener served five terms as a United States Congressman and took a position on the Del Mar board in 1986. In 2003 he received the title director emeritus when illness limited him.

"Clair was just a wonderfully warm man who was happiest when he was helping you," said DMTC president and general manager Joe Harper, who worked with Burgener for more than two decades. "He was always willing to offer his counsel and it invariably was wise advice. He helped steer Del Mar on good courses on more than one occasion and we are in his debt."

Burgener served 24 years in elected public office, starting with the San Diego City Council and going on to the California State Assembly and then the U.S. House of Representatives.  Born in Vernal, Utah, in 1921, he served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, and then graduated from San Diego State College (now University) before being called back into the military, serving in the Air Force during the Korean War. He settled in San Diego and began his political career in 1953.

He served on numerous boards, including the Board of Regents of the University of California, and for a time was chairman of the California Republican Party.

He is survived by his wife, Marvia, and two sons.
