Former trainer Fallon dies at 87

Posted: Wednesday, October 18, 2006

Martin Fallon, who trained 1959 Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap winner Hillsdale in a career spanning more than 50 years, died on Sunday in Louisville following a decade-long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 87.

Fallon started in racing as a jockey in Indiana. He switched to training after returning from World War II and recommended owner C.W. Smith's private purchase of Hillsdale as a two-year-old in 1957.

Fallon took Hillsdale to California at the start of his three-year-old season, and the Take Away colt scored wins in the 1958 Will Rogers Stakes, Michigan Derby, and Malibu Stakes.

Hillsdale won eight stakes in California as a four-year-old in 1959, capped by a victory in the $139,500 Hollywood Gold Cup.

After shifting to New York, Hillsdale won the Aqueduct Handicap and finished second to eventual Horse of the Year Sword Dancer in the Woodward Stakes, with Round Table following in third.

Fallon also won nine stakes with American Comet, including the 1960 Santa Catalina and '61 San Antonio Handicaps, after claiming the gelding on Smith's behalf for $15,000.

Fallon based his operation in Pennsylvania for the last few decades of his career, winning 1,586 races on the East Coast between 1976 and 1999. He served as president of the United Thoroughbred Trainers of America in the 1980s.
