Funeral services set for Friday for California trainer Garcia

Joe Garcia Jr., a former assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Lazaro Barrera who saddled Squirtle Squirt to victory in the 2000 Hollywood Juvenile Championship Stakes (G3), died on November 12 in Arcadia, California, of colon cancer. He was 53.

"He was very popular, a good guy, a nice man," said jockey agent Craig O'Bryan, a close friend. "He put up a valiant fight."

Garcia grew up on the King Ranch in Texas. He helped train two-time Horse of the Year and 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed and 1976 champion three-year-old colt Bold Forbes during a 17-year stint with Barrera.

Garcia trained Squirtle Squirt as a two-year-old. He also captured the 2000 Willard L. Proctor Memorial, Haggin, and Barretts Juvenile Stakes with the dark bay or brown horse.

Squirtle Squirt was transferred to trainer Bobby Frankel in 2001 and earned an Eclipse Award as champion sprinter after concluding his three-year-old campaign by winning the Penske Auto Center Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).

Garcia is survived by his wife, Patricia, and four children.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. PST at the Live Oak Cemetery chapel site in Monrovia, California.
