Howard, former Woodbine chairman, dies at 81

Posted: Wednesday, June 07, 2006

Ontario racing stalwart J. F. "Jake" Howard, former chairman of the board of directors for the Ontario Jockey Club/Woodbine Entertainment Group, died on Saturday at age 81.

Howard, a lawyer who was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1966, was involved in Canadian racing for more than 30 years. He served as a member of Woodbine's board of trustees since the mid-1980s, as chairman of the board of directors from 1999 to 2001, and most recently as honorary chairman of the board.

An enthusiastic owner since 1970, Howard campaigned Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds, although winning a major stakes at Woodbine eluded him. He will be represented by stakes-placed winner Questuary, a homebred he co-owns, in the $438,550 Woodbine Oaks on Sunday. The Archers Bay filly is trained by his son, Ian.

Other horses Howard raced, either alone or in partnership, include 1999 Lady Angela Stakes winner Millashand and '96 Ontario Lassie Stakes winner Mordacious, dam of Questuary, both homebreds.

Howard's survivors include his wife of 55 years, Nancy.

A memorial service for Howard is set for June 23 at Woodbine in the Northern Dancer Room from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. EDT.—M.L.
