Gans, Kentucky Derby enthusiast, dies at 102

Louise Jones Gans, who attended 85 runnings of the Kentucky Derby (G1) from 1919 through 2004, missing the classic only once, died on Thursday at her home in Louisville. She was 102.

"Ain't nobody been to more Derbys than this lady," Gans told the Louisville Courier-Journal in 2000 at age 96.

Her attendance record was marred when she missed the previous year's Derby after breaking her hip only two weeks prior.

Although her attendance record is one that Churchill Downs cannot verify, track spokesman Tony Terry told the newspaper that "We've never heard anyone [else] lay claim to that many Derbys."

Gans, an accomplished horsewoman, attended her first Kentucky Derby when she was 16 in 1919 and watched Sir Barton take home the roses.  Her grandfather, George Scoggan, co-owned Proctor Knott, who finished a nose behind Spokane in the 1889 Derby. 

A Derby celebrity, Gans did not have the strength to attend the 2005 Derby, her son George Gans III told the Louisville Courier-Journal, adding that he called her from Churchill Downs the day of the race that year so that family members could sing My Old Kentucky home to her on the phone as the horses walked to the track.
