Parfet, owner of Horse Greeley, dead at 84

Thoroughbred owner and breeder Ray T. Parfet Jr., who bred and owned 2006 Del Mar Futurity (G2) winner Horse Greeley with his wife Martha, died November 27 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was 84.

The Parfets campaigned Horse Greeley, a 2007 classic candidate trained by Richard Mandella, as well as the colt's dam Chile Chatte, a Grade 1-placed Storm Cat mare.

Parfet, known as "Ted" by many friends, was a bomber pilot with the Army Air Corps in World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following his military service, he began his career at Upjohn pharmaceuticals after marrying Martha Gilmore, a granddaughter of the company's founder.

Starting as an accountant and rising steadily through the ranks, he led Upjohn through extensive international growth as chairman and chief executive officer, a position he held from 1969 to 1987. He retired from the board in 1994, shortly before the company's merger with Pharmacia, which now is part of Pfizer.

In addition to their Thoroughbred interests, the Parfets brought professional hockey to Western Michigan with teams that competed in the International Hockey League and later the United Hockey League.
