Prominent Canadian owner Stavro dies at 78

Posted: Tuesday, April 25, 2006

Steve Stavro, who owned six Canadian champions accounting for eight Sovereign Awards, died on Monday at age 78.

Stavro raced and bred under his Knob Hill Stables, named after his Toronto-based grocery chain and warehouse, which he retired from in 2000.

Stavro owned his first horse in the late 1960s, but his stable grew to major prominence in the 80s, when Stavro won the 1988 Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Race Course with Granacus. The Ontario-bred is the last Canadian horse to win the Blue Grass. He went on to finish 11th in the Kentucky Derby (G1), beaten 9 1/4 lengths by Winning Colors.

Stavro's stable really broke through in 1992 when Benburb, his homebred son of Dr. Carter, upset 1-to-20 favorite Alydeed in the Prince of Wales Stakes. Later that year  Benburb beat Alydeed again, along with American champion A.P. Indy, in the Molson Export Million Stakes (Can-G2) and was named Canada's champion three-year-old colt and Horse of the Year.

That same year, Stavro's homebred Cool Victor filly Apelia was named Canada's champion sprinter, and his Bold Debra was voted broodmare of the year.

Steady success followed and in 1999 Stavro's homebred Sky Classic gelding Thornfield won the Canadian International Stakes (Can-G1) and was named champion grass horse and Horse of the Year. Stavro was back in the spotlight again in 2000 when his homebred Cure the Blues filly Saoirse, produced by Apelia, was named champion older mare.

Stavro's last champion was the fleet homebred filly Chopinina. The Lear Fan filly finished second in the 2002 Atto Mile Stakes (Can-G1) and was voted champion grass mare.
