Brophy, co-owner of Strike the Gold, dies at 69

Posted: Tuesday, April 11, 2006

B. Giles Brophy, managing partner of the group that raced 1991 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Strike the Gold, died on Sunday in Camden, South Carolina, after a long illness. He was 68.

Brophy entered racing in the early 1980s and enjoyed his first stakes success in 1990 with Thirty Six Red, who won the Wood Memorial Invitational Stakes (G1) and finished second in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and third in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) for trainer Nick Zito.

That same year, Brophy and partners William Condren and Joseph Cornacchia bought Strike the Gold as a two-year-old from Calumet Farm in a five-horse package for a total of $3-million. Strike the Gold accounted for $500,000 of the purchase price.

After finishing second in the 1991 Florida Derby (G1), Strike the Gold won the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and Kentucky Derby. After a sixth-place finish to Hansel in the Preakness Stakes (G1), he finished second by a head to that rival in the Belmont Stakes (G1).

As a four-year-old, Strike the Gold won the Pimlico Special (G1) and Nassau County (G2) Handicaps and finished second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1).

Brophy, who lived in New York City, also raced homebred stakes winner Itaka.

At the time of his death, Brophy was visiting his two-year-olds in Camden, according to his wife, Patricia.

Brophy is also survived by five children and two grandchildren. Plans for a memorial service have not been finalized.—Jeff Lowe
