Zimmerman, trainer of world record setter Procreate, found dead in home

Posted: Sunday, April 09, 2006

Trainer John Charles Zimmerman, who saddled Procreate to a world record setting performance in the 2005 Yankee Affair Stakes, was found dead in his Aventura, Florida, home on Sunday. He was 46.

Cause of death was unknown, pending an autopsy.

The Palmyra, Pennsylvania, native went right from high school to the race track in 1977, plying his trade at Penn National Race Course. He started working as a trainer in 1983, and saddled 17 stakes winners in his 23-year career, including More Smoke, winner of the 2005 Lafayette Stakes (G3).

The most recent highlight of Zimmerman's career was Procreate's win in last season's Yankee Affair, in which the Mt. Livermore colt sizzled, going five-furlongs in a world record :53.79 over Gulfstream Park's turf course. Zimmerman was preparing Procreate for a repeat performance in Saturday's renewal of the Yankee Affair.

In his career, Zimmerman saddled 1,469 winners from 6,818 starters, who earned $14,425,783. He had 13 winners from 61 starters at Gulfstream's current meeting.

Zimmerman is survived by a daughter, Mallory, and two sons, Matt and Brett. Funeral arrangements were pending as of Sunday afternoon.
