Funny Cide store closes but merchandise still available

Posted: Wednesday, June 09, 2004

With the racing spotlight shining brightly on Smarty Jones this year, operators of the Funny Cide Store on Caroline Street in Saratoga Springs, New York, have closed the shop.

The overhead of the store was too much for owner Wendy Cook to bear, and she has moved.

Cook's mother, Dorothy Knowlton, who is married to Jackson Knowlton, managing partner of Funny Cide's ownership group, told the Saratogian newspaper that she would continue to sell Funny Cide memorabilia at her shoe store, Saratoga Soles.

Cook had operated the Funny Cide Store, which opened last year after Funny Cide won the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1), in conjunction with Beyond Balloonatics, which supplies party balloons. Cook sold the balloon business to Patrice Mastrianni, owner of Creative Sparks, a paint-your-own-pottery operation.
