NTRA, Racing Form establish Joe Hirsch scholarship

A scholarship and internship honoring the career of turf writer Joe Hirsch was established by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and Daily Racing Form in the wake of the writer's retirement later this month.Known for taking young writers under his wing, Hirsch covered Thoroughbred racing for 55 years and will retire as the Form's executive columnist on Saturday. The scholarship will help pay for the recipient's education costs and be funded by NTRA Charities and Daily Racing Form. The scholarship also includes an internship with winners taking part in programs at a Thoroughbred racing- or journalism-related organization.

"Joe Hirsch's greatest legacy perhaps will be the enthusiastic and endless help over the years he provided to hundreds of writers who came onto the horse racing beat," said Steven Crist, Daily Racing Form chairman and publisher. "It is with great joy that we establish this annual scholarship and internship program, which is the ultimate honor to Joe by continuing his love of helping others."
