Chicago suburb considers Arlington off-track betting parlor
Arlington Park has appealed to McHenry, Illinois, aldermen for approval of an off-track betting parlor in the city, which is located about 25 miles northwest of Arlington Heights and 55 miles northwest of Chicago.
McHenry aldermen plan to meet on Monday night to decide on an agreement that would give Arlington a revocable license for a parlor in return for a zoning variance that would allow the Churchill Downs Inc. track to operate three satellite dishes on the property. Either Arlington or the city of McHenry could terminate the agreement at any time.
There is some opposition to the plan. Alderman Andy Glab told the Northwest Herald that he has received several calls from constituents who spoke against the parlor.
"From what I'm hearing from my constituents, it's a resounding no," Glab said. "Is this the type of establishment you have in a family-orientated town?"
Horsemen in the area support the parlor and Police Chief Thomas O'Meara said that law enforcement agencies in other communities have had few problems with parlors in their areas.
