Five protesters arrested outside Churchill Downs

The Reverend Louis Coleman and social activist Dick Gregory were among five people arrested yesterday outside Churchill Downs for second-degree criminal trespassing.Coleman was protesting Churchill's hiring practices, claiming that less than 1% of the work on Churchill's $26-million phase one renovation has gone to local minority-owned contracting firms.

Churchill disputes Coleman's figures, as executives claim that 23% of the $18.5-million spent on the project so far have gone to minority or female-owned firms, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports.

Mattie Jones, Mattie Mathis, and Roosevelt Roberts also were arrested after they refused to leave the property following requests from both Churchill officials and police that they do so. If convicted, they could face fines of up to $250 and jail time.

Despite the arrests, Coleman said that the protests would resume today.
