Finalists tabbed for George Woolf Award

Posted: Friday, October 11, 2002

Jockeys Robert Colton, David Flores, Richard Migliore, Mario Pino, and Edgar Prado have been nominated for the 2003 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.

Jockeys from across the nation vote for the winner from nominations made by the Jockeys' Guild and Santa Anita Park. Ballots will be distributed to riders across the United States early next month, and the 2003 winner will be announced in January.

The Woolf Award, now in its 54th year, memorializes the jockey known as "The Iceman," who died in a spill at Santa Anita in 1946. The award recognizes Thoroughbred jockeys whose career and personal character reflect positively on themselves and the sport of Thoroughbred racing.

Past winners include Racing Hall of Fame members Bill Shoemaker, Eddie Arcaro, Laffit Pincay Jr., Angel Cordero Jr., Chris McCarron, Eddie Delahoussaye, Pat Day, Jerry Bailey, and Gary Stevens. Russell Baze was the 2002 winner.

"We are very pleased with the five riders selected as finalists for this very fine award," said Santa Anita President Jack Liebau. "Not only are they outstanding riders, they are all highly regarded individuals in their communities."
