Yearling out of champion Dance Smartly dies in paddock accident

An Ontario-bred yearling produced by Dance Smartly, 1991 Canadian Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner who also won an Eclipse Award the same year, died in a paddock accident in April at Sam-Son Farm near Ocala. The youngster was a son of leading sire A.P. Indy

"Fate has a terrible way of doing those types of things to the ones you're most excited about," Sam-Son President Tammy Samuel-Balaz said. "He was just an awesome colt."

The unnamed colt was a half brother to Canadian champion and Queen's Plate Stakes winner Dancethruthedawn, Queen's Plate winner Scatter the Gold, as well as the stakes-placed winner and sire Dance Brightly. A full brother to the deceased colt was foaled on April 20; Dance Smartly is currently in foal to Thunder Gulch.

"We're trying to keep everything in perspective, and I knock on wood as I say this, but the colt on the ground now is stunning," Samuel-Balaz said. "We're just happy that Dance Smartly followed up with another A.P. Indy colt, is in foal again, and is doing well."—Ed DeRosa
