Jockey Castillo injured in Belmont mishap, horse euthanized

Jockey Heberto Castillo Jr. was taken to North Shore University Hospital on Friday after his mount, A Moment in Dixie, ducked into the rail during the stretch run of the ninth race at Belmont Park and unseated him.

Castillo and A Moment in Dixie were on the lead in the one-mile maiden special weight contest on the turf when the incident occurred. A Moment in Dixie ducked into the portable rail on the Widener Turf Course and Castillo fell to the ground. Dancethebluesaway then brushed Castillo as the rider crawled back onto course.

Castillo was conscious when taken to the hospital, where he was treated for a laceration to his forehead and was held for observation. A Moment in Dixie, a three-year-old New York-bred daughter of Dixie Brass out of the Conquistador Cielo mare Anxious Moment, owned by Carl Lizza's Flying Zee Stable, suffered severe trauma to the left side of her neck and was later euthanized. She had one second and one third in eight career starts and earnings of $13,020. She was trained by Philip Serpe.

Delehanty Stable's homebred Lady Nelson won the race and Dancethebluesaway finished eighth.
