Mackie, Stoess named to Calder mutuels department positions

Posted: Saturday, November 30, 2002

Longtime racetrack executives Edward Mackie Sr. and Diane Stoess have been appointed to positions in the mutuels department at Calder Race Course.

Mackie has been named director of mutuels at the Miami racetrack. He has more than 30 years of experience in the pari-mutuel industry and was director of mutuels at Hialeah Park from 1974 through 2001. He also has been the head cashier at Gulfstream Park since '74. He will begin his duties on April 25, opening day of Calder's 2003 meeting. Mackie replaces Patrick Mahony, who has accepted the position of vice president of mutuels for the New York Racing Association and will begin his role there at the conclusion of the Tropical at Calder meeting on January 2.

Stoess, whose background in pari-mutuels dates back to 1981, has worked in simulcast coordination at Calder since 1992. She will continue to be simulcast coordinator but also will serve as the assistant mutuels manager.

Stoess has also worked as ITW/ISW (intertrack and interstate wagering) director for Calder, Gulfstream Park, and Hialeah Park, as well as the assistant mutuels manager and head of the money room at various other tracks. She, too, will begin her new duties at Calder on opening day.

"I am very pleased to say that we will continue to have a strong leadership in the mutuels department here at Calder," said Calder President Ken Dunn. "Both Ed and Diane have the experience and expertise to head the department and we're happy to have them both in these roles."
