Massachusetts could limit wagering on state-bred races

Suffolk Downs near Boston recently received permission from the Massachusetts State Racing Commission to declare some state-bred races as win-bet only.

The move comes shortly after the track took a $24,000 loss on November 16 when a bettor wagered $310,000 to show on Jill's Layup in the Amelia Peabody Stakes for Massachusetts-bred juvenile fillies, the Boston Globe reports. The bettor's large wager created a minus show pool compounded by the fact that Massachusetts law mandates a $2.20 minimum payout, or a 10% return, while most other states require only a $2.10 minimum.

The commission approved Suffolk's request, noting that Massachusetts-bred races often present one strong contender in an otherwise weak field. Jill's Layup won her race over five rivals by 1 1/4 lengths.

Suffolk took advantage of the commission's decision on November 23 when it allowed win betting only on the $30,000 Massachusetts Oaks. African Princess was sent off as the 7-to-10 favorite in the field of six and although she did not win, the daughter of Sundance Ridge did finish second.
