Rood and Riddle to sponsor Dowager Stakes
Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington will become the sponsor of the 2003 Dowager Stakes, a 1 1/2-mile event for fillies and mares on the turf annually conducted during Keeneland Race Course's fall meeting.
"We've always believed that it is important to be active in our community and in the Thoroughbred industry," said Dr. William Rood, one of the firm's founders and director of its hospital services. "So, it is only natural that we sponsor a race at Keeneland, which shares our mission of giving back."
Run last weekend and won by Lapuma, the Dowager will have its purse increased from $100,000 added to $150,000 guaranteed in 2003.
"We recognize Rood and Riddle's contributions to the community and are proud to add them as a sponsor of the Dowager," said Rogers Beasley, Keeneland director of racing. "The Dowager is a rare opportunity for fillies and mares to run a mile and half on the turf for a nice purse, and now with a $50,000 boost, we believe it will attract even better horses."
