Magna withdraws interest in Suffolk Downs

After two years of discussions between Magna Entertainment Corp. and Suffolk Downs, it appears unlikely that Magna will involve itself in leasing the East Boston, Massachusetts, racetrack.

"We did learn on Friday that Magna notified [Suffolk President] John Hall that they're withdrawing," Robert O'Malley, Suffolk chief operating officer, told the Boston Herald.

Suffolk's managing partners were reportedly split on whether they should lease the track to Magna. Chairwoman Patricia Moseley was an opponent of such a move, possibly because slot machines at Massachusetts racetracks could become a reality following November's election.

Magna currently has deals pending to purchase Lone Star Park and a majority interest in the Maryland Jockey Club racetracks. Chairman Frank Stronach had renewed his interest in acquiring Suffolk while he was in town to see his Macho Uno win the Massachusetts Handicap (G2) on June 1.
