McCarron, O'Malley to be honored by New England Turf Writers

Retired Racing Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron and Suffolk Downs's Chief Operating Officer Bob O'Malley will be honored by the New England Turf Writers Association during its 61st annual awards banquet at the Davenport Yacht Club on November 25.

McCarron will receive the Lou Smith Memorial Award for contributions to the New England Thoroughbred industry in 2002. A native of Dorchester, Massachusetts, McCarron began his career working in the stable area at Rockingham Park.

O'Malley will receive the Sam McCracken Memorial Award for lifetime contributions to New England racing. He has been affiliated with Suffolk Downs for more than 30 years.

Others to be honored include Joe Hampshire Jr., who will receive the Eli Chiat Jockey Award as the top rider in New England; and Ron Dandy, who will receive the Gerry Sullivan Memorial Trainer Award.

Divisional champions to be honored are Francis Vitale's homebred Max a Million, two-year-old colt or gelding; Bruce Mendel's Gold I. D., three-year-old colt or gelding; John Kirby's homebred African Princess, three-year-old filly; Anthony Pyliotis's Esteemed Friend, older male and sprinter; Teresa Horky's and Keith Shelansky's Tip the Scale, older female; Monarch Stable's Tom Maior (Brz), male turf horse; and Joseph Duys's Sword Princess, female turf horse.

Champion two-year-old filly will be decided after the running of the Mom's Command Stakes at Suffolk Downs on October 19.
