Turfway opens holiday meeting on Sunday
Four stakes anchor Turfway Park's 20-day holiday meeting, which begins on Sunday.
The stakes are worth $50,000 each and begin with the Holiday Inaugural for fillies and mares at six furlongs on December 7; followed by the My Charmer Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on December 14; the Prairie Bayou Handicap for three-year-olds and older at 1 1/8 miles on December 21; and the Gowell Stakes for two-year-old fillies at six furlongs on December 28.
Defending leading rider James Lopez heads a competitive jockey colony that will be joined by Marlon St. Julien, a former leading rider on the Louisiana-Texas circuit, and Jason Lumpkins from the Northern California circuit. Trainer Bernie Flint will be seeking his second straight and eighth overall holiday meet title.
Live racing will be conducted every Wednesday through Sunday until December 31.
The winter-spring meet begins January 1 and continues through April 3. Post times are 5:30 p.m. EST on weeknights and 1:10 p.m. on weekends. A special 1:10 p.m. first post is scheduled for December 26 through January 1.
