Sam Houston jockeys on maternity leave
Posted: Wednesday, November 14, 2001
Two riders who have made their presence felt at Sam Houston Race Park have been out of action recently but could return to competition next year.
Charlotte Bronstad and Liberty Lebrun both have been out of the saddle while on maternity leave. Bronstad owns 72 victories, including 44 at Sam Houston, since launching her career in 1999. She and her husband, Bob, are expecting their second child—a girl—on January 19. Bronstad is undecided on whether to pursue her riding career or return to school and try a career in nursing following her daughter's birth. She has a degree in petroleum engineering and she and her husband also are parents to a son, Chance, who is 3 ½ years old.
Lebrun, who obtained her jockey's license in 1997, has ridden 87 winners, including 36 at Sam Houston. She has been assisting her husband, trainer William Bretthorst, with his stable while awaiting the birth of their first child. She has indicated she would like to return to competitive riding, according to a news release from Sam Houston.
