Hillenbrand wins Big Sport of Turfdom award

Posted: Wednesday, December 12, 2001

Laura Hillenbrand, author of bestseller "Seabiscuit: An American Legend," has been named the winner of the Turf Publicists of America's Big Sport of Turfdom award for 2001.Hillenbrand will be presented the award at the 36th annual Big Sport of Turfdom luncheon on February 18 at a site to be determined in South Florida, the morning of the Eclipse Award ceremony. The Big Sport of Turfdom award, which recognizes an individual whose cooperation with the media enhances coverage of and brings favorable attention to racing, has been presented annually since 1966.

Hillenbrand, who suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and is rarely able to leave her Washington D.C. residence, spent four years researching and writing the book from her home. She was honored with an Eclipse Award for outstanding magazine writing in 1998 when her freelance article on Seabiscuit appeared in American Heritage magazine.

"The book obviously transcended Thoroughbred racing and sports and the fact that it's still on bestseller lists almost a year after it was published confirms its universal appeal," said Bob Curran, president of the Turf Publicists of America. "Laura's personal story is every bit as interesting and inspirational as Seabiscuit's. She richly deserves the Big Sport of Turfdom award for her unwavering cooperation with media as they descended on her in person and by phone over the past nine months."

Past recipients of the award include Bill Shoemaker, Burt Bacharach, Steve Cauthen, Jack Klugman, John Forsythe, Tim Conway, and Jim McKay. Racing Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay Jr., the all-time winningest rider in racing history, became the first two-time winner last year in New Orleans.
