General George Handicap recap: Affirmed Success impressive

Posted: Tuesday, February 22, 2000

In 1999, it took Albert Fried Jr.'s Affirmed Success until his last start of the season, the Cigar Mile Handicap (G1), to record his first victory of the year. This year, it took the six-year-old Affirmed gelding all of seven furlongs to get off the duck.

Ridden confidently by Jorge Chavez, Affirmed Success won the seven-furlong General George Handicap (G2) by a half-length over late-closing Young At Heart on Monday at Laurel Park to become an equine millionaire. It was the gelding's ninth victory in 20 lifetime starts, and gave him his first winning streak since winning three races, including the Vosburgh Stakes (G1) and Forego Handicap (G2), in 1998.

A competitive early pace was set in the General George when Cat Be Nimble, Wise Dusty, and Iron Punch vied for the lead. After a quarter in :23.01, the three were running in tandem, with Affirmed Success stalking just off the pace. As the field entered the far turn, Chavez chose to go the overland route, sending Affirmed Success four-wide after the leaders. He easily assumed control following a half in :46.00, and entered the stretch with a clear lead.

Young At Heart and Badge, who knifed his way through traffic at the top of the lane, had dead aim on Affirmed Success inside the eighth pole. But Affirmed Success was far the best, crossing the finish line in 1:22.02 for the seven-furlong distance. Badge was third, beaten a nose by Young At Heart.

Richard Schosberg trains Affirmed Success, who is out of the Irish Tower mare Towering Success. He earned $120,000 with the victory, increasing his lifetime bankroll to $1,054,980.
