New Hampshire Senate approves video slots

The New Hampshire Senate approved the use of video slot machines at the state's four racetracks, including Rockingham Park, on Thursday, the Nashua Telegraph reports.

Despite the Senate approval, the bill is not expected to clear the House, however. House Speaker Donna Sytek, who opposes expanded gambling, said the chamber last year approved a rule that blocks the passage of video gaming this year without a "super-majority vote."

Money generated through the video slot machines would allow the state to repeal an inheritance tax and give a break to those paying tax on investment income. The revenue also could aid in the elimination of a state budget deficit in 2001.

New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen has supported video gaming in the past and said she would sign it if the bill reached her desk.
