Ashland Stakes preview: Cash run tops short field

Posted: Friday, April 07, 2000

Padua Stable's Cash Run, winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), will attempt to make the $500,000 Ashland Stakes (G1) her third consecutive stakes victory of 2000 on Saturday at Keeneland.

The D. Wayne Lukas-trained filly by Seeking the Gold out of the Pleasant Colony mare Shared Interest, will carry 123 pounds, seven more than her five rivals in the 1 1/16-mile race. She comes into the Ashland off victories in the Davona Dale (G2) and Bonnie Miss (G2) Stakes, both at Gulfstream Park.

Circle of Life, winner of the Spinaway Stakes (G1) and third behind Finder's Fee in the Matron Stakes (G1) in her last two starts as a juvenile, will try for her first 2000 stakes win in the Ashland. She is coming off an allowance win at Gulfstream Park on March 5. She is trained by Todd Pletcher for owner Michael Tabor.

Rings a Chime ran fourth her last time out behind Overbrook Farm's Surfside in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) on March 12. The fourth-place finish was the only time Rings a Chime has failed to hit the board in 10 starts. Lonnie Arterburn trains the daughter of Metfield for Turf Side Stables.

The field, in post-position order, with jockeys and weights:

1. Rings a Chime, Shane Sellers, 116;

2. Deed I Do, Mike Smith, 116;

3. I'm Just a Peach, Tracy Hebert; 116;

4. Circle of Life, Richard Migliore, 116;

5. Zoftig, Marlon St. Julien, 116; and

6. Cash Run, David Flores, 123.
