Circle of Life, Scottish Halo top New York-bred award winners

Graded stakes winning juveniles Circle of Life and Scottish Halo top the list of New York-bred divisional champions selected recently by the New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. All winners will be honored during an annual awards ceremony later this year in Saratoga Springs.

Circle of Life took home honors as champion New York-bred two-year-old filly after going 2-1-1 in four starts last season for owner Michael Tabor and trainer Todd Pletcher. The daughter of Belong to Me won the Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course and was second there in the Schuylerville Stakes (G2).

John Oxley's Scottish Halo was 3-for-5 last season, including victories in the Laurel Futurity (G3) and First State Stakes at Delaware Park. The son of Jolie's Halo is trained by Paul Rizzo and was named champion two-year-old colt.

The other award winners include Phil the Grip, who won the Kentucky Cup Classic Preview Handicap (G3) at Turfway Park. The six-year-old son of Crafty Prospector took home honors as champion older male. Champion older female went to Theresa the Teacha.

Also claiming awards were Gander (three-year-old colt), Belle Cherie (three-year-old filly), Adcat (turf male), Terreavigne (turf female), Jena Jena (sprinter), and Greek Hero (steeplechaser).

The New York-bred horse of the year, broodmare of the year, trainer of the year, and breeder of the year will be announced during the awards ceremony on August 1 in Saratoga.
