Sportsman's Park trainer becomes jock's agent

Sportsman's Park trainer Joey Carmardo surrendered his trainer's license Friday to become agent to jockeys Fabio Arguello Jr. and Kelly Sampson. Camardo replaces Steve Leving as Arguello's agent. Sampson had been booking her own mounts before hiring Carmardo.

Leving, who accepted a position as stable manager for Frank Calabrese, said "Fabio is a good rider. I hope he stays here and does real well. Mr. Calabrese has always been a staunch supporter of Illinois racing and I look forward to working for him."

Camardo, 40, acted as agent for Vince Amato, Ronnie Hirdes, and Vicki Warhol several years ago before turning his attention to training. "It was a tough decision (to make the switch from trainer to agent) because I like winning races," said Camardo. "But riders like Fabio Arguello and Kelly Sampson are good to have."
