Retired trainers Mattingly and Rowan dead

Richard B. Mattingly, who trained stakes winner All Rainbows—later dam of champion and 1988 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Winning Colors—died on Tuesday. Based mainly on the Kentucky circuit in the 1970s and `80s, Mattingly saddled All Rainbows to win the Poquessing Handicap and Mademoiselle Stakes, both at Keystone Park, in 1976.

James J. Rowan, a trainer and racing official based primarily in Maryland, also died on Tuesday. He was 80. Rowan trained for more than four decades, winning the 1948 Louisiana Derby with Bovard, before retiring in 1972. For the next 15 years, Rowan worked in the racing offices of the Maryland Jockey Club.
