The Deputy sharp in Santa Anita Derby drill

Team Valor's and Gary Garber's The Deputy (Ire), preparing for the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on Saturday at Santa Anita Park, worked five furlongs handily in 1:00 1/5 on Tuesday at the Arcadia, California, track.

Regular rider Chris McCarron was aboard the three-year-old son of Petardia, who won the Santa Catalina Stakes (G2) and finished second to Kentucky Derby (G1) candidate Fusaichi Pegasus in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) in his only two starts on dirt.

"I'm hoping he goes forward (off the March 19 San Felipe), " said trainer Jenine Sahadi. " I'm hoping he runs really well this weekend, but we'll just see what happens."

The Santa Anita Derby field is also expected to include 1999 champion two-year-old colt and Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Anees, Grade 1 stakes winners Captain Steve and Surfside, San Rafael Stakes (G2) winner War Chant, and Cocky.
