Surfside adds blinkers for Santa Anita Derby
Top three-year-old filly Surfside, who will race against males for the first time on Saturday, will be equipped with blinkers when she runs in the $1-million Santa Anita Derby (G1).Trainer D. Wayne Lukas made the decision to run the daughter of Seattle Slew in blinkers shortly after announcing his plans to run her on Lasix. Surfside has won four consecutive starts—including all three this season—without blinkers.
"It helps them focus," Lukas told Daily Racing Form. "I like to run some horses in blinkers, and she's one I want to try. She's worn them for her last (several) works."
Surfside is expected to be one of the favorites for the talent-deep Santa Anita Derby, which also features the undefeated War Chant, The Deputy (Ire), and Captain Steve. Surfside has won 7-of-9 career starts, including a victory last time out in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1), for $1,040,230 in earnings.
