Captain Steve razor sharp in Santa Anita work

Multiple graded stakes winner Captain Steve tuned up for Saturday's Santa Anita Derby (G1) with a razor sharp five-furlong workout over the Santa Anita Park main track on Monday.

With apprentice jockey Dana Barnes up, the three-year-old son of Fly So Free went the distance in :58 2/5, fastest of 35 works at the distance. Captain Steve's time was 2/5 faster than stablemate Silverbulletday, the 1999 champion three-year-old filly who is prepping toward a possible return to the races this month at Keeneland.

Trainer Bob Baffert said he timed Captain Steve in :58, galloping out six furlongs in 1:11 2/5.

"He went very well, well within himself. At this point, I don't worry about the competition, I just worry about my own horse. And this horse is ready to roll," Baffert said.

Captain Steve is winless in two starts this season, including a third-place effort last time out in the Louisiana Derby (G2) for owner Mike Pegram. He also finished third behind The Deputy (Ire) and High Yield in the Santa Catalina Stakes (G2) in his seasonal debut.

Winner of 4-of-10 career starts and $834,256, Captain Steven won last year's Hollywood Futurity (G1) and Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (G2).
