Phar Lap honored with Australian coin

*Phar Lap, the New Zealand-bred gelding who became Australia's greatest racehorse, has been honored with the issue of an Australian $5 coin, released during what is the 70th anniversary year of his winning the Melbourne Cup (Aus-G1).

To mark the running of the Sydney Turf Club's Phar Lap Stakes (Aus-G2) at Rosehill racecourse on Saturday, former jockey Jack Baker was a guest of honor and was presented with a proof edition of the coin. Connections of race winner Lord Essex and jockey Lenny Beasley also received a coin.

*Phar Lap won 37 of his 50 starts, many of which are now rated as Group 1 events, including the Cox Plate twice, Victoria Derby, and the A.J.C. Australian Derby. He won at distances from six furlongs to 2 ¼ miles.—Delamere Usher
