Anees and Surfside work at Santa Anita; Mighty works at Churchill
Last year's champion juvenile, Anees, and Surfside, the only filly nominated for the Kentucky Derby (G1), worked at Santa Anita Park Sunday morning in preparation for the upcoming Santa Anita Derby (G1).
The Thoroughbred Corp.'s Anees covered six furlongs on a fast track in 1:11.80, the fastest time of the day for that distance, under new rider Corey Nakatani. His is trained by Alex Hassinger Jr., who said the colt galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25 3/5.
D. Wayne Lukas-trained Surfside, owned by Overbrook Farm, worked five furlongs in :47.20, more than two seconds slower than the :45.40 bullet workout for that distance logged by Wild 'n Wet, a Melvin Stute trainee who was recently claimed for $20,000.
At Churchill Downs, Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Mighty worked five furlongs over a wet track in 1:00.80 for trainer Frankie Brothers. Mighty is preparing for the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland on April 15, his final prep race before the Kentucky Derby on May 6.
