Theyskens’ Theory, White Moonstone to clash in Fillies’ Mile

Posted: Thursday, September 23, 2010 3:30 PM

by Tim Nichols

Impressive Group 3 winner Theyskens’ Theory and unbeaten multiple group stakes winner White Moonstone will vie for supremacy on Saturday in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile Stakes (Eng-G1) at Ascot.

Both fillies are pointing to the English One Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) next year. More than early favoritism for the English classic will be up for grabs on Saturday, however, as the winner will get an automatic starting spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G2) on November 5 at Churchill Downs as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series.

Godolphin’s White Moonstone, by Dynaformer, enters Saturday’s race with three wins from as many starts, most recently rolling to a five-length win in the Keepmoat Delivering Community Regeneration May Hill Stakes (Eng-G2) on September 10 at Doncaster.

She also owns a Group 3 victory at seven furlongs on August 7 at Newmarket and debuted with a 1¼-length win at six furlongs on July 23 at Ascot.

Theyskens’ Theory, by Bernardini, jumped onto the scene with five-length victory in a maiden race on July 31 at Newmarket and a 1 ¼-length score in the Chichester Observer Prestige Stakes (Eng-G3) on August 28 at Goodwood in her most recent start.

The sentimental choice in Saturday’s race may be Date With Destiny, the lone progeny of ill-fated,two-time European champion George Washington (Ire). A $534,677 purchase at the 2009 Tattersalls October yearling sale, Date With Destiny enters off a sixth-place finish in the Prestige Stakes for trainer Richard Hannon.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien will be represented by Group 3 winner Together, who most recently finished fourth, beaten 1¾ lengths, in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Ire-G1) on August 29 at the Curragh. Together replaces Ballydoyle’s Group 1 winner Misty For Me, who will forgo the race with a bruised foot.

I've seen both of these fillies. White Moonstone is really something else. 3 for 3. Has pretty much destroyed all three field's she faced. Theysken's Theory is also a top class filly. Unbeaten as well. I don't think there's very much between them in form on paper. I give White Moonstone a slight edge. But she'll have to work a bit for this win. I don't see her running away from Theysken's Theory. JMO.
