Multiple Group 1 winner Ask retired with tendon injury

Posted: Friday, September 03, 2010 6:33 PM

Multiple Group 1 winner Ask has been retired after pulling up with a tendon injury during exercise on Wednesday at Newmarket.

The seven-year-old by Sadler’s Wells out of Request, by Rainbow Quest, was being pointed to a start in the Irish Field St. Leger (Ire-G1) on September 11. In August, he was ruled out of a start in the Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup (Eng-G2) at York due to lameness.

The bay horse won seven of 19 career starts, including seven group victories, and earned $1,486,022 during five seasons of racing under Sir Michael Stoute. Owned by Patrick Fahey, he captured three of four starts last season, including the Investec Coronation Cup (Eng-G1) and Prix Royal-Oak (Fr-G1). He finished fifth in the Gold Cup (Eng-G1) in June at Royal Ascot in his only start this year.

“He had small damage on a tendon—it was nothing too serious, but this is the second time it has happened in recent times, and we decided against taking any more risks with him,” Fahey told Racing Post.

“On Monday, he goes to Elms Stud [in Northhamptonshire] to recover, and where he goes to stand [at stud] has yet to be decided.”
